April's love for the creative arts came to life in the Bronx, NY where she was born and raised. Her first childhood passion, gymnastics, paved the way to years of dedication in martial arts, in which she achieved her black belt at the age of 17. During her college years, she studied ballet, jazz, flamenco and African dance.
April has been teaching Mambo/Salsa for over 17 years. She began her dance training in 1994 with Angel and Addie Rodriguez and performed for several years with their dance company, Razz M'Tazz. She has had the privilege to train and perform with some of New York's finest dance companies, such as Yamulee, Eddie Torres, Descarga Latina, and Santo Rico. Some of April's performance highlights include dancing at Madison Square Garden for a Fania All Stars Concert and dancing in the off-Broadway show Latin Madness. She is grateful to have danced on stage with some of her favorite artists, such as El Gran Combo, Oscar D'Leon, Celia Cruz, Tony Vega, Roberto Roena, Jose Alberto El Canario, Miles Pena, Ruben Blades, Ray de la Paz, and Tito Nieves. April appreciates the opportunity dance has afforded her to travel nationally and internationally to teach and perform.
While attending Harvard University, she pioneered the growth of the "on 2" NY Style Salsa Scene in Boston, MA. After graduating, she continued teaching and hosting dance socials for ten years, in addition to co-directing six Boston Salsa Congresses.
April finds joy in coaching and motivating her students to achieve their dance goals. She has choreographed and directed her own dance company, Melaza, for three years. She currently directs and choreographs for her student team, Latin Moves' Ladies.
April is passionate about helping her students gain confidence on the dance floor, and using dance to create community and unity amongst people from all walks of life. She is proud to be a part of the Latin Moves Family since 2001.
